It can be very hard these days to get a supermarket delivery slot but there are options when you really look. Dart Fresh can deliver all the groceries you need to your door (and even your freezer!) the very next day. Personally when I heard this I thought it sounded fantastic but I assumed you’d pay heavily for the privilege. However a quick look at the prices on the website proved me very wrong. Let’s find out more…

What is the background to Dart Fresh?

We started in 1957 as a wholesale fruit and veg merchant. When lockdown happened and all the restaurants and pubs had to close we lost ninety percent of our customer base and started doing home retail. This is a new branch of our business but we’ve come a long way in twelve months. We’re a family business that is big enough to cope and small enough to care. The home retail service has gone extremely well and we will definitely be continuing even after lockdown is lifted.

What services do you offer?

We’re an online grocery store that deliver to your door six days a week with next day delivery. I don’t think there’s anything that we don’t sell. We do dairy, fruit and vegetables, dry goods for your pantry, butchery, fish and shellfish and even pet food! We do fresh and frozen food. You can get your whole weekly shop from us in one go.

Tell us about the team

It’s a family business. There’s me and my son George and my son-in-law Jamie and then some really key team members. The company ethos is that the customer is the most important part of the business. Every single customer gets a phone call from the team the day before delivery to confirm the order and make sure they haven’t forgotten anything. The customer comes first and we give a really personal service.

How do your prices compare to other online grocery companies?

We’re never going to be an Aldi or a Lidl and we don’t want to be. However we match ourselves against Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. Just last week we picked ten items at random and we ended up being 15% cheaper than Tesco and even more than that with the other two. On some of those ten items we were more expensive but then our average was cheaper and I was happy with that.

Is there anything that your customers are surprised about when they first use you?

Most people are surprised that we’re so reasonably priced. With how hard it is to get a delivery slot with most of the supermarkets people assume that we’ll be charging a premium to deliver the next day. They’re shocked when they see that we’re cheaper than where they normally shop. They’re shocked at the personal service that we offer too. We’ve had customers mention to us the day before that they’re going to be out but that they’ve got a freezer in the shed and we then sort it all for them and put it away.
