Beautiful metalwork from Tom May
Cubist fire tongs (pictured above), delicate candelabras, ornate fence panels and gates, imaginative well covers and decorative nature poles for the garden – these are just some of the bespoke projects that skilled metalworker and SouthHams.com member, Tom May, has turned his hand to. In fact, there is nothing he enjoys more than conjuring up original designs based on his experience and feel for the medium and which consistently exceed clients’ expectations.
'Metalwork has both strengths and limitations and the key to a successful outcome is to understand it and work with it. Add a little bit of lateral thinking and creativity into the mix and that’s what makes the work exciting,’ Tom says.
Based in Kingsbridge in the South Hams, Tom spent several years learning his craft from local blacksmiths before landing a major commission from Burncoose Nurseries of the Caerhays Estate near Redruth in Cornwall. Long time exhibitors at Chelsea, the Nurseries’ oriental themed garden designs provided the inspiration for the stunning dragons that Tom has since become known for.
Tom’s dragons featured in Burncoose’s previous two Chelsea gardens and helped them to secure a Silver Gilt in 2014 followed by a coveted Gold medal last year. ‘Whilst the dragons have become my hallmark to an extent, this year’s Chelsea project for Burncoose will be a little different,’ he hints. ‘It’s still a work in progress but Chelsea is fast approaching so it won’t be long before all will be revealed!’
