Wendy Harris - Harris Law
Wendy has been a practising lawyer for the past 20 years and has worked in various law firms in and around Devon. Whilst specialising in employment law she would often find herself dealing with companies who presented with problems that could have been resolved before a lawyer was ever needed.
Wendy said: “In my day-to-day work as a lawyer, I was constantly dealing with problems when it was all too late and I quickly realised that these businesses needed more than an employment lawyer, they needed someone to get involved in their businesses earlier and prevent the problems occurring in the first place, they needed an employment Lawyer and an HR Manager too”.
As a result of this, Wendy is now an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and is a specialist in HR Management.
Wendy works with businesses, both big and small, who outsource their HR needs to Harris Law. This means that as well as providing contracts, policies and ongoing HR support with regard to complex issues, she is at the end of the phone whenever a business needs her and with her experience as a lawyer, she can help negate risk and see the bigger picture creating a bespoke and specialist experience for each of her clients.
Wendy is also passionate about helping small start-up businesses to get off on the right foot when it comes to the legal side of business. She has created a ‘Start Up Package’ to cater specifically for companies in their infancy with just one or two employees.
The Start Up Package, which can be tailored specifically to the needs of each business, gives clients the basis to grow their endeavour from the very best starting point. It includes an employment contract, a suite of policies, and a one-to-one phone call with Wendy to go over any issues.
For business start-ups, budgets can be tight, and that’s why Harris Law offer a one-off fixed fee for this service which ensures the new business has everything they need to stay on the right side of the law.
“These start-ups often end up becoming long term clients as they grow”, Wendy explained, “and I love working with new businesses, there is so much excitement around it and I feel really invested which is why they get a really personal service from me.
“We have a great team here and sometimes work alongside other HR Consultants who work as our associates but everything in Harris Law comes through me, so I can oversee everything. It's always me on the end of the phone, I’m the point of contact, and I get to know my clients really, really well and will always advocate for them and protect them from risk whenever I can.”
Harris Law can also provide you with access to online HR support software as they partner with Breathe HR. This software allows you to centralise your employee information and documents securely, manage holiday bookings and sickness on one easy to use system, upload your HR documents and keep records of every meeting. Wendy can access that remotely if she needs to and make sure everything is running smoothly.
Harris Law can also take on senior role recruitment projects, either as a “hand-holder” through the process or to complete the whole project on behalf of a business. They also offer HR training on any HR topic.
Through the pandemic, Harris Law was on hand for their clients to help them through the new processes and policies that company’s had to quickly take on board.
“Everything was changing all the time and we were navigating in unknown waters”, Wendy explained, “but because I have such good relationships with my clients, and they trust me, I was able to give them the best advice I could and help steer them through what was a very tricky situation for everyone."
Harris Law have never increased their prices in the six years they have been in business, with Wendy saying that she “doesn’t feel the need to, it's good value for money for everyone”.
As a Chartered Legal Executive, Wendy is regulated by CILEx Regulation and must follow their code of conduct. She and Harris Law are fully insured and Wendy is required to undertake yearly training as part of her continued professional development.
“This is what sets Harris Law apart from others,” says Wendy, “Yes, I am an HR consultant, but I am also a qualified lawyer of 20 years standing and I think that makes all the difference”.
“A client once said to me, “when I am dealing with a difficult HR situation, I imagine you are sitting on my shoulder and I think to myself, what would Wendy say?”, my response to her was obvious, “I would say call Wendy…” I just love that!”
