A South African inspired restaurant and take-away in Salcombe, in the South Hams, South Devon.
The Braai Guy is the brainchild of Chef Tom Douglas. Situated in a cozy alleyway in the centre of Salcombe behind the Salcombe Coffee Company, The Braai Guy offers no-frills, straightforward dining, whilst still focussing on the essence on what people want- Fast, delicious food and drink, served with a smile. Tom’s South African roots are entangled all the way through The Braai Guy, with his heritage featuring the moment you walk through the door. The Braai Guy offers something for everyone- light bites such as biltong and droewors, salads for the healthy eater, burgers and loaded fries for that carb fix, and deserts to satisfy that sweet tooth. Every hour is happy hour at The Braai Guy, with local beer on tap, ice cold South African Rose in the fridge, and delicious homemade cocktails to take the edge off the fast pace of Salcombe!

However we would not come here again as a family. The two options for children were either sausage and chips or burger and chips completely unimaginative.
I would offer a small carrot burger option or a one chicken thigh but with marinade and no spice.
We have children aged 5-12.
The 12 year old had the jerk chicken and loved it. The 5 year old is not yet used to spice and so unfortunately had literally sausage and chips.
I shared a carrot burger with our 8yr old. It turned out our 5 year old loved the carrot burger when she tried some. Sorry to write such a negative review but we really can do better for our children.
We are used to the views, but they are still stunning. Faultless x
Came a few weeks ago with sister & 3 kids, back again just us this weekend and we’ll certainly return again before the end of the summer. Yes it’s a lovely view but the food is The Thing - really hoping that Tom & Co stick around next year too. This is a 2021 highlight: in context, we’ve actually planned our holiday around The Braai Guy availability!
We’ve tried almost everything - the beef was superb, pulled pork excellent, boerwors (?sp) as excellent as it tasted in S Africa, skinny fries outstanding… but the highlight MUST be the smoked cauli burger. WOW++ This is the best food I’ve eaten for a very, very long time with no impact of lockdown.
Meat eaters or vegans, please enjoy!
Shout-out too for friendliness and welcome, professional organisation, laid-back atmosphere (don’t worry, these guys are totally on it - no slack standards) and, just as important, a really great range of drinks alongside. Port Waterhouse is lovely and being able to reach it by boat or ferry from Salcombe is an added bonus for us when we don’t fancy the lanes.
Braai Guy team, THANK YOU!
