Footpath improves access to important outdoor space

A new footpath is encouraging even more use of South Brent Recreation Ground, according to the town’s recreation association.

The project for the path around the edge of the recreation ground received £12,052 from South Hams District Council to finish the third phase of tarmacking the new path. The work, which was completed last year and ensured the path could open in October, cost around £17,000, with £5,000 previously secured through a different grant.

The path has provided a route suitable for all weathers, encouraging additional use of the ground. It has also provided a link to the adventure trail. There are also future plans for outdoor gym equipment adjacent to the path.

The funding came from Section 106 funding relating to the Fairfield development.

South Hams District Council’s Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Jonathan Hawkins, said: “This humble footpath project has proven to be surprisingly important to the community of South Brent.

“It improves access to the recreation ground all year round, which opens up an important community outdoor space throughout the winter months.”

Peter Kelly, chairman of the South Brent Recreation Association, said: “The South Brent Recreation Association is pleased to have completed a seven year, £65,000 project to provide a safe and dry path around the edge of the recreation field at South Brent.

“Since the completion and opening of the footpath in October, the path has been well used by not only dog walkers, by people of all ages in all weather, particularly in the very wet November when people were able to walk without getting covered in mud.

“It is hoped in the coming year to provide not only additional seating but exercise equipment around the course of the path. The Recreation Association is most grateful for the support and grants received to enable the footpath to be completed.”
