From installing state-of-the-art flat roofs that are beloved by mortgage lenders, to repairing traditional slates and tiles.  The Art of Roofing is a family-run business, started in 1983 by owner, Steve, and still going from strength to strength. Here, he explains the variety of services they offer, and how his journey went from after school job to scaling new heights… 

What’s the background to the business/how did it come about?

I started off working for my best friend’s dad’s roofing business during the school holidays from the age of around 15, and then I went full time when I was 19. There was a threat of redundancy and so, feeling confident and capable, I set up my own roofing company not that long afterwards, and it has been an incredible success from the start.

What exactly do you do?

Our speciality is traditional and high-end contemporary systems that offer guarantees of 25 years or more. I enjoy solving long-standing roof issues, and so no job is considered too small. We specialise in all aspects of roofing from flat roofs to tiled and slate roofs, PVCu fascias, guttering, soffits, roofing repairs, lead work, chimneys, and all leak issues relating to roofs and their different coverings.

How many members of the team are there?

We are a small, dedicated, fully-experienced team of three. I lead from the front and I am on-site from start to finish on all contracts. We don’t ever contract work out.

What have you got coming up over the coming months?

We are increasingly installing fibreglass flat roofs. It is a system that has been a traditional part of boat building for a long time, and so it has become recommended more and more often by architects, councils and building control alike, such is its proven track record.
