A new comedy play will be touring the South Hams, with profits being donated to the local Foodbank.

Grant Davis, a screenwriter with credits on the BBC and ITV, as well as KATS Kingsbridge Amateur Theatrical Society, has written a comedy sketch show that will be touring the South Hams.

Coming back to the stage in West Charleton on 10 January, the idea came to Grant when people mentioned to him that getting to Malborough for the KATS performances could be difficult.

The Southammers will perform a couple of hours of one-scene, comedy plays and comedy songs.

Grant said: "The content circles around kitchen-sink settings. What do you do when your lodger dies, and you find a winning lottery ticket in his room? What do you do when you find your boss and his wife are about to arrive for dinner and your ex-wife has shown up and passed out, drunk, in the bathroom?

"The inspiration for this idea came to me when I asked people if they saw such-and-such being performed by KATS. A depressingly frequent answer would be that there was no bus service back into South Hams when the production finished.

"This meant that there was a group of people who might like theatrical entertainment but either cannot drive or find the night-time drive to Malborough a problem. So, I thought it would be an idea to take a performance to them.

"Having already written and performed a few successful one-act comedies, this would provide a basis for the performance."

Grant, a seasoned actor with KATS and TV, stage and radio writer, has brought on board Alex Dower and Katy Dower, both actors with movie, West-end stage credits and TV appearances and Sarah, a vibrant, witty and engaging amateur actor.

The plays will be presented as radio plays – a la Goon show – and since two of the troupe volunteer at the food bank each week, they felt this project could benefit the much-needed charity.

The Southammers will return on 10 January at West Charleton Village Hall at 7.30pm. There will be a licensed bar and tickets will be available at the door at £10 a ticket. The limit will be 100 people as per fire regulations.
