Kingsbridge Feoffees are calling for donations to save the town hall clock

Kingsbridge Town Lands Charity, known as Kingsbridge Feoffees, has launched a bid for donations to save the town hall clock. 

Kingsbridge Town Hall, currently housing Merlin Cinemas, was built in 1850 and in its rich history it has been the office of the local police force, a prison for petty criminals, a drill hall for the Devonshire Rifle Corps, a courthouse and the offices of the town council until they moved to Quay House in the 1950s.

But the town clock and the rest of the building is in jeopardy and requires restoration. 

The clock, which was added in 1875, has a local legend, which says that the back of the clock has a blank face so that inmates at the local workhouse (which now houses Palladium Builders Merchants) couldn't see the time and "clock-watch" from the windows.

Kingsbridge Town Land Charity owns and manages the Market Hall, the Town Hall (which is part-leased to Merlins Cinemas) and 25 affordable homes rented to local families. 

The cost of the work is being estimated to cost more than £100,000. 

The Feoffees can "cover half the cost" of the repairs, but they are reaching out to the local community to raise the rest of the amount.
