New MP has "overturned 100 years of history" with "amazing result"

Liberal Democrat Caroline Voaden has been elected as MP for South Devon, for the first time in 100 years. 

Caroline Voaden MP, speaking after her result securing a majority of more than 7,000, said: “In December 1923 Henry Vivian was elected as Member of Parliament for Totnes Constituency. He lost his seat 10 months later and a Conservative has been elected at every single general election here since then. We have just overturned 100 years of history in South Devon and what an amazing result."

Caroline Voaden was named the 'people's champion' by South Devon Primary, which held town hall meetings to encourage people across the district to "vote tactically" if they didn't want a Conservative MP. 

On social media, South Devon Primary said: "Progressive voters in South Devon have rejected petty tribal politics. They ignored the party managers who tried to stop us all coming together, and they united behind the fantastic PeoplesPrimary winner Caroline Voaden to help create a truly historic victory.

"Respect and thanks to all the Green and Labour supporters - and disillusioned Conservatives - who lent their votes to make this happen.

"And a big thank you to Green candidate Robert Bagnall, without whom South Devon Primary could not have happened. 

"Today people in South Devon took back control of their democracy."
