Pupils from East Allington Primary School had a day out of the classroom exploring local habitats and aquatic species with the Slapton Ley Field Centre.

Hazel Class (Years 2 and 3) visited the centre earlier this month, where the children took part in pond dipping at Slapton Ley, exploring the different creatures and habitats that can be found there.

There were lots of exciting discoveries throughout the day, with highlights including finding water boatmen, dragonfly nymphs, water snails and many other fascinating aquatic creatures. The children showed great curiosity as they investigated their finds and developed their understanding of the local environment.

We ended the day with a wonderful nature walk, providing further opportunities to explore and learn about the natural world around us. It was a fantastic day of practical, hands-on learning and a lovely opportunity to take our learning beyond the classroom.

Katie Davies, Hazel Class' teacher, said: "The children were enthusiastic, engaged and inquisitive young scientists and were a real delight to have representing our school in the local community. We would like to say a huge thank you to Chloe, Kate and Fiona at Slapton Ley Field Centre for everything they did for us. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!

"If you have not yet had the opportunity to visit Slapton Ley Field Centre and the surrounding protected area, we would highly recommend a visit. It really is a hidden gem within our local community and a wonderful place to explore, learn and appreciate the natural environment on our doorstep."
