A fire at Westbrook Laundrette on Tuesday, 21 July, is believed to have started accidentally.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service (DSFRS) were called just before 7pm on Tuesday, to reports of smoke at the property on Church Street.

The road was closed while emergency services worked to prevent the fire spreading to other neighbouring buildings.

No injuries were reported and a spokesperson for DSFRS said "the cause is believed to have been accidental".

David White, Westbrook Laundry, took to social media today, Wednesday, 22 July, to say thank you to all of those who had sent himself and his team "messages of support", saying "genuinely, they’ve meant a lot to us".

He explained: "Where things stand today: the fire service and insurers are continuing their work at the premises, and until that’s complete we can’t get inside. We know many of you have items with us and are anxious for news — as soon as we’re able to get in and assess everything, we will be in touch and post an update.

"Please bear with us; we’ll give you straight answers as soon as we have them. In the meantime, please don’t leave any laundry, deliveries or collections at the shop.

"If you need to reach us, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with your name and ticket number if you have items with us. We’ll reply to every message, though it may take us a little while. We’re speaking with our commercial customers directly over the coming days.

"We’re determined to get Westbrook back up and running as soon as we possibly can. Thank you for your patience — and for the kindness this community has shown us.

"David and the Westbrook team."

We hope the team get back on their feet as soon as possible.
