About Us

We have offices in the beautiful seaside towns of Dartmouth and Salcombe.

The partnership of BBH was established in 1976 in Dartmouth, and in 2017 our new office in Island Street, Salcombe was established.

The practice actively encourages the “in house” training of architectural staff and sees this as a positive influence within the office and indeed on the success of the work we produce.

We operate an equal opportunities policy which offers such in both the employment of staff and the full architectural service that we work positively to provide.

At all levels staff are encouraged to learn and diversify their talents and enthusiasm for architecture and as such a management structure exists which ensures that all staff in the practice plan their continuing professional development programme.

The practice is a member of the RIBA CPD “Continuing Professional Development” scheme and as an office we run monthly CPD seminars and support and encourage attendance at external building events, seminars and local RIBA building visits and exhibitions.

Our Approach

We are a Chartered Practice focused on the future and we value highly our long established roots in the town and port of Dartmouth. We wish to build on our ability to provide an important service locally and with an already excellent reputation throughout the South West we are producing creative, sensitive and high quality building designs from smaller projects, extensions and alterations through to large scale commercial and residential developments. We maintain an ethos that no project is too small, too big, or too diverse for our office to undertake.

We have a powerful working knowledge and extensive experience of the planning, listed building and conservation area policies. This combined this with our design expertise has established our reputation with local planning authorities throughout the South West and our work maintains standards that have won design awards and commendations in the most sensitive of areas.

We believe strongly that design evolves from a carefully considered brief and we actively seek to avoid a single style, believing strongly in the importance of local and regional variety.

We seek to create tailored new buildings and spaces for our clients’, whilst striving for performance, integrity and excellence rather than passing fashions in design.

Our experience varies from the use of traditional and historic construction techniques and materials to that of well tested contemporary technology. We believe strongly in working closely with all our clients to produce a sensible and viable strategy for all projects, seeking to establish the correct early design decisions that can fundamentally affect the overall cost, quality and value of a successful project.

Our areas of expertise are broad ranging, stemming from our roots and base in Dartmouth. Over the years we have developed extensive skills in dealing with conservation and historic buildings, new buildings and sensitive infill development, urban design, sustainability. We have throughout this time worked closely with both the private and public sector to provide concept development and feasibility studies that have sought to positively influence and enhance our varied built surroundings.

In all of these fields we are committed to providing a professional and full architectural service that can involve our input and guidance from an initial concept idea through to project completion. We are also able to tailor our involvement to provide input at any single stage of a project and as such can be flexible in order to suit the particular needs of a client or project.

Our team are focused on providing a professional service at every stage of a project with which we are involved.

We have a highly equipped office, with the latest software and hardware to enable us to present any scheme dynamically for any presentation requirement. We are able to tailor dramatic and realistic presentations for sensitive planning situations through to large scale public consultation displays. We have the latest Computer Aided Design software that enables schemes to be developed precisely from initial survey through to working drawings and the construction process on site.
