Totnes Rare Breeds Farm announces "with great sadness" the death of their last red squirrel Rosie.

Totnes Rare Breeds Farm no longer has red squirrels following the death of their last individual, an elderly female called Rosie.

A spokesperson for the centre said: "[Rosie] had lived on her own for a couple of years after outliving all the others.

"At one time we had a thriving colony that enchanted our visitors with their antics. Unfortunately, these days are past."

The rare breeds farm shared the news on their social media accounts, alongside a "beautiful photo" taken by Jess Kimsey.

It is unlikely they will be replacing their red squirrels in the near future, and are planning to focus their funds in other places.

The spokesperson continued: "As much as we would love a colony again, the most we would be allowed is a single pair in a much larger enclosure. While we will not disagree with this, we have come to realise that the cost of building a much larger enclosure is prohibitive at this time.

"Our great concern is that visitors were always disappointed to not spot a Red Squirrel before when we still had Rosie, so for us to build a larger enclosure still with a single pair of squirrels in it is not feasible.

"We hope you will understand our reasoning and sincerely apologise for any disappointment caused, but our funds shall be put towards other projects that will bring our visitors much greater satisfaction.

"Rosie shall not be forgotten, nor the days of our fantastic Red Squirrels."
