Totnes Rare Breeds Farm

Products or Services Provided
Totnes Rare Breeds farm is a small, family run attraction set in beautiful surrounds beside the South Devon Steam Railway. We offer a highly interactive experience that can be enjoyed by both children and adults alike. From cuddling with a Guinea Pig to smoothing the feathers of an Eagle Owl, we hope that you will make some fantastic memories with us.
We are fully wheelchair and buggy friendly. Dogs are welcome on a lead in the Garden Cafe, but not in the farm itself. Although we are far from large by many attraction standards, we find that bigger is not always best! It is possible to rush around in 30 minutes, relax for the day, or anything in between!
A bit of background
The farm began when the original owners retired down to Devon and cleared what was once wasteland between the railway tracks to create the little piece of paradise you see today. What began as a small collection of rescue animals soon grew, until they opened to the public in 2002 and the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm was born.
Samantha (Sam) Adams began working here in 2012, before becoming the new owner in January 2015. With the invaluable help of her family, staff and a team of volunteers, she is working hard to continue to provide a wonderful place for families to visit; where animals are there to be loved and interacted with, not just viewed from behind a barrier.
It's all about conservation!
One of our main aims at the farm is to help in the conservation of rare breeds. From chickens and ducks to Welsh Mountain sheep and Golden Guernsey Goats, we are trying to do our bit to aid in their survival.
We believe that interaction with animals is important, whether you are 1 years old or 101! Don't miss out on our adorable baby Pygmy Goats when they are born in the summer...we find that the public make the best climbing frames! Purchase a bag of animal feed on entry and you will soon be everyone's best friend...just watch out for the greedy goats!
Our friendly team of staff and volunteers are always on hand to help you make the most of your experience and answer any questions you may have.
The Pets' Corner
Come into our newly refurbished Pets’ Corner to meet some of our smaller residents. Step in quietly to see our newly-hatched chicks and ducklings snuggling under the heat lamps and meet a few more of our fluffy animals.
If you are feeling brave, why not ask to meet our friendly Corn Snake and feel her smooth skin? Or do your best to spot one of our snoozing Chinchillas and be entranced by the tiny Harvest Mice in their straw burrows.
The Garden Cafe
Our lovely cafe is a wonderful place to visit in its own right. Relax in its peaceful setting beside the Steam Railway and enjoy a tasty panini or a slice of homemade cake? For those with a slightly larger appetite, our famous cream teas are not to be missed!
The cafe is open to all members of the public, without the need to visit the farm!
If you have any allergies or dietary requirements, please ensure that you speak with the cafe staff who will do all they can to help you. We cannot guarantee that we will have what you are looking for, so if in doubt please phone ahead to ask what we can offer.
