At first glance, a rural business park might seem an unusual setting for a premium interiors fabric outlet but not when you consider the original intent.

‘My husband, Nick, has been in the wholesale fabric business for years,’ explains Rebecca Ingoe of Ultimate Fabrics at South Hams Business Park, Churchstow. ‘He specialises in sourcing and supplying clearance designer fabrics at heavily discounted prices to the trade.’ Names like Sanderson, Zoffany and Harlequin, for example. ‘So, when we first opened at Churchstow three years ago, that was the plan.’

However, when you’re selling top brands at discounts in excess of fifty percent of the recommended retail price, word soon spreads.

‘Next thing we knew, passers-by would stop to see what we were doing and it wasn’t long before people were actively seeking us out. And not just homeowners either; we also get professional makers and upholsterers bringing their clients in to choose fabrics from our ranges. We still supply to the trade but the retail side has just grown and grown,’ says Nick.

So much so, that a couple of months ago, Nick and Rebecca moved to a new warehouse triple the size of their original unit. ‘We now have an upstairs show room, too, and the range of makes, materials, colourways and designs we are able to stock is fantastic!’ enthuses Rebecca.

Together with assistant, Sarah, the pair has forged a reputation for great choice and value combined with friendliness and expertise. Just recently, a couple from London based their Westcountry holiday around a visit to their showrooms. ‘Our prices are so competitive, we have customers coming to us from all over the country. Plus, our regular re-orderable lines from, for example, Clarke & Clarke and Prestigious are also very keenly priced which only adds to our appeal’ says Nick.

In addition to soft furnishings fabric, you might be lucky enough to find some gorgeous Laura Ashley throws, perhaps, or hotel-quality bedlinen. ‘We never know what we’re going to have from one week to the next because these are often end-of-lines or clearance stock so, as the saying goes, when it’s gone, it’s gone,’ says Rebecca.

The couple has also branched out into periodic pop-up fabric sales staged at venues across South Devon and beyond, where customers can select from a large range of fabrics in two- to three-metre lengths. These have proved to be immensely popular so keep an eye on their Facebook page (@ultimatefabrics) or website below for the next one planned to make sure you don’t miss out!

For more information, visit their website at www.ultimatefabrics.co.uk or call 01548 288300. You can visit their showrooms at Unit 7b, South Hams Business Park, Churchstow from Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, and Saturday, 10.30am to 1pm.
