VIDEO: Kingsbridge RFC U14 show amazing teamwork after eventful match

Kingsbridge RFC had an eventful U14 match over the weekend, with a paramedic car, ambulance, air ambulance all attending. 

Kingsbridge Rugby Football Club clashed with Teignmouth Rugby Club on Sunday, and the match ended up being much more dramatic than usual, but saw the team pull together in more ways than one. 

Kingsbridge RFC suffered three separate injuries that day, all to their front row. 

First a player suffered a rotator cuff injury to his shoulder that saw him being taken to Newton Abbot hospital by his mum. 

Later, another player suffered a broken wrist plate that needed to be sedated and set at Derriford. 

But the real drama occurred when a player injured his head and neck on the try line. A paramedic car arrived, followed by an ambulance, and then even the Devon Air Ambulance helicopter arrived.

Luckily the 13-year-old's injuries were not severe enough to need airlifting and he was transported to Torbay Hospital by land ambulance, where he was treated for a concussion. 

But as he was being transported from the field, the ambulance got stuck in the mud. This is when his teammates showed the core values of rugby: teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship, and all banded together to push the stricken emergency vehicle off the field.

Chris Courtney, KRFC U14 team manager, explained: "They really came together. This team is made up of a few different groups and we've had conversations with them about gelling as a team, but on Sunday they really pulled together. 

"They were applauding the ambulance and their teammate as they were taken off the field and when the ambulance slowed down they rushed over to bang the sides and send their friend off; it was once they got there they realised it was stuck and all worked together to push it out, and there was a second round of jubilation and cheering. It was a lovely atmosphere. 

"We lost the game (the guys from Teignmouth were HUGE and we lost our entire front row) but they really came together as a team and they all wanted to continue the game afterwards. 

"It can be really hard to stay motivated when you see three of your teammates get injured, but they all carried on. When the chips were down, they really pulled together." 

All the injured lads are OK and on the road to recovery.
