Blackawton Primary School have held their Summer Fete

Year 6 children put together the stalls to raise money for their legacy; the legacy money is put back into the school to buy something in the Year 6’s memory, usually a bench or some games.

The fete is an annual event for children and their families to enjoy and this year it was also used as an opportunity to launch ‘Project Playground.’  

The afternoon was also a chance to open the school’s new pond. The pond forms part of the school’s expansive outdoor grounds, which they use for their Forest School. The school community was joined by Tim Bennett the Totnes Deputy Mayor for the grand opening and the ribbon was cut by the school’s Wildlife Champions.

The Forest School is a key facet of their emphasis on learning outdoors. Every child in the school from Nursery to Class 5, enjoys Forest School every week, all through the year, whatever the weather. The school teaches practical bushcraft skills, from safe fire lighting to campfire cooking and safe use of tools, playing active games, as well as exploring nature and the seasons. 

Liam Fielding, Headteacher at Blackawton Primary School said: “I want to say a big thank you to everyone who came along to the Summer Fete. It was a brilliant afternoon and lovely to welcome so many people from the local community to the school for a fun filled time.  

"It was empowering seeing the children’s hard work and efforts celebrated by so many people.  I am also delighted with the new pond, we now have a fantastic resource that can support learning from Curriculum, to sustainability, to understanding our natural environments."
