Kingsbridge Coastguard Rescue Team helped evacuated Plymouth surrounding the WW2 bomb

Kingsbridge Coastguard Rescue Team were part of the evacuation in Plymouth following the discovery of an unexploded World War Two bomb. 

Kingsbridge Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to assist with the Major Incident that was called in Plymouth following the discovery of an unexploded World War Two bomb in a residential area.

Working alongside multiple agencies, KCRT helped evacuate parts of Plymouth to "allow military experts to work on the safe removal of the device". 

A spokesperson for KCRT explained the two day incident, saying: "On Thursday, an early start for the team as they met at Plymouth Argyles Stadium, Home park, with large numbers of volunteers from partnering agencies to have a major incident briefing. After the brief the team headed to their [rendezvous] point and began helping with evacuating residents.

"Team members were also tasked to assist those unable to remove themselves from their homes for medical reasons. After this the team assisted the Police in holding cordons around the bomb site. After a 12 hour day the Kingsbridge team were back on station ready for the next callout.

"On Friday, after spending Thursday afternoon/evening looking assessing the Bomb, military experts decided the safest option would be to detonate it out at sea. An immediate callout went to all local CRT’s for members to [rendezvous] back at Home Park.

"Again with multiple Coastguard Rescue Teams, other emergency services and partnering agencies, we all took part in another incident briefing. With a much larger area to evacuate teams worked again to clear a large area of the City so that the bomb could be transported to a nearby slipway and transferred onto a boat.

"Helping to evacuate hundreds from their homes and provide safety cordons to allow safe travel for the military team carrying the bomb, the teams were kept busy all day. Thankfully the bomb was safely transported out to beyond Plymouth Breakwater before it was later safely detonated.

Coastguard teams included: Kingsbridge, Brixham, Bigbury, Paignton, Torbay, Plymouth, Beer, Weston-Super-Mare, Bideford, Polruan, Dawlish, Boscastle,Hartland Point, Bude, and Polzeath. 

Search and Rescue Teams included: Ashburton, Tavistock, North Dartmoor, Plymouth, East Cornwall, West Cornwall, Cave Rescue, and Exmoor. 

Other services who took part included: Kingsbridge Police, Devon & Cornwall Police, South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, Devon & Cornwall 4x4 Response, REACT Disaster Response.
