MotherBorn Collective has gone from strength to strength over the last year, supporting nearly 200 families and helping parents find their village.

While MotherBorn provides practical support, education and guidance throughout pregnancy and early parenthood, its "greatest achievement" has been "helping to rebuild the sense of community and connection that many families are missing".

Between May 2025 and April 2026, they engaged with 192 families, with around 60 families accessing their groups, events and services each month.

Steph Pope, Breastfeeding Counsellor, co-Founder and director, explained: "With the closure of local children’s centre services many years ago now, and many families living far from relatives or established support networks, becoming a parent in and around Kingsbridge can often feel isolating.

"MotherBorn offers a welcoming space where women, babies and families can meet others who understand the realities of pregnancy, infant feeding and raising young children."

SH, a mum to a 14-month-old, explained how MotherBorn has supported her. She said before finding them, she was "feeling quite isolated at times, without a safe space to talk openly or just relax with others who understood what I was going through".

She said: "I received breastfeeding support, which gave me the confidence and reassurance I needed in those early days. The first aid course was incredibly valuable, giving me peace of mind and practical skills to keep my baby safe.

"I’ve also benefited from general advice on all sorts of parenting questions, which has been a huge help. Most of all, having a safe, welcoming, and non-judgemental space to come for a hot cup of tea and a laugh has made such a difference for both me and my baby.:

Over the past year MotherBorn has:

  • Run our own programme of popular parent and baby groups, many of which have been fully booked
  • Provided drop-in sessions for families seeking support, reassurance or simply a friendly face
  • Hired out breast pumps, TENS machines and slings to parents in need
  • Facilitated classes and workshops led by a range of local practitioners
  • Created opportunities for parents to build friendships, share experiences and develop lasting support networks
  • Helped families feel less alone during one of the biggest transitions of their lives

Steph continued: "The feedback we receive consistently highlights the importance of having a place where parents can find not only information and support, but also genuine connection with others who understand the challenges and joys of early parenthood.

"Our work has been recognised by the Kingsbridge Town Council and the Devon Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership, both of whom have provided funding and sponsorship in recognition of the difference these services are making for local families."

As demand continues to grow, MotherBorn are looking for volunteers, sponsors and supporters who share our vision of ensuring that every family has access to the community, connection and support they need:

  • Sponsorship of groups, workshops and community activities
  • Donations to support the ongoing running costs of our services
  • Volunteers who can contribute their time, skills and experience to help strengthen support for local families

Steph added: "At its heart, MotherBorn is about helping families find their village. In a world where many parents are navigating early parenthood without nearby family or traditional support networks, we are proud to be creating a community where parents feel welcomed, understood and never alone."
