If you need delicious pizza with local ingredients for your event, Artisan Pizzeria are the people to call!

Artisan Pizzeria is a mobile pizzeria run by Steve and Vanessa Wassell, based in Slapton, which uses all local, Devon-based ingredients for their pizzas, including flour from Buckfastleigh, cheese from Sharpham and mushrooms from Totnes.

“It is more expensive to get local ingredients”, explained Steve, “but it really is worth it to get quality. I’m a strong believer that if you put great things in the oven, great things come out.”

Steve and Vanessa came to the South Hams initially as managers of Slapton Sands Camping and Caravanning Club Site and fell in love with the place.

“We worked for the Camping and Caravan Club for a number of years and they move managers around sites regularly, so we eventually came to Slapton and completely fell in love with the place and the people.

“Working on the site, we often couldn’t get food vans to come to us as we were very out of the way, so on our days off I took a couple of training courses and started offering pizzas ourselves. The visitors LOVED them and we loved making them.

“So, we have rescued a horsebox from the middle of a farmers’ field and restored it, creating our mobile pizzeria. Since then we have expanded to a converted Transit van and we have a gazebo to cover all weather eventualities.”

When the Camping and Caravan Club wanted to move them to another site, Steve and Vanessa took the plunge and decided to stay, making Artisan Pizzeria their full time job and keeping them in the South Hams.

Steve said: “Coming to the South Hams has completely changed our lives. Slapton welcomed us from day one. During Covid, we volunteered for the food bank and other places making deliveries and we became part of the community.”

Artisan Pizzeria is available for parties, weddings, functions, and is often spotted at the local trade shows. This year they are going to be at Crabfest in Salcombe, the Kingsbridge Food and Music Festival, Dartmouth Food Festival and Powderham Food Festival.

They also often can be found at sites across the South Hams during the summer, including their founding site in Slapton Village Hall. You can find out where they’ll be throughout the year by following their Instagram page.

Throughout the winter, they are also offering delicious coffees and hot chocolates.

“We strive to make our pizzas better everyday, and we want to create incredible pizzas for our amazing customers and we can’t wait to see everyone soon!
