Hope Cove Gallery has something for everyone as well as a beautiful location

A gallery that captures the beauty of its fishing village surroundings while catering to every budget, is going from strength to strength.

Hope Cove Gallery is almost like finding a treasure trove under the sea, with ocean-inspired artwork on every surface, and a friendly, eclectic vibe throughout the whole place.

Since 2014 the shop has been owned and run by multi-media artist Allie Alpass and continues to support nearly 30 local and Devon based creatives.

Allie started managing the gallery under the previous owners in 2010, exhibiting her photography and driftwood art.

She said: “I have been very lucky to watch artists come and go through the gallery and I have since taught myself a variety of painting skills to produce as much artwork as possible. Now nearly half of the work in the Gallery is my own. 

“I have a good repertoire of work from watercolour jellyfish and bold textured Lobsters to abstract pictures of local scenes. I’ll collect shells and sea glass to make collages, handmade clay cards and jewellery. The variety of art keeps me motivated and inspired. My work is my play.”

Local fine art photographer Becci Hey joined the team 5 years ago and now has a permanent exhibition at the Gallery. Her evocative and etheric sunset images are widely regarded. She too turns her hand to other mediums, and has a beautiful range of velvet blankets and bags with her designs.

“Hope Cove speaks for itself”, Allie explained, “it translates beautifully into different mediums and we have been able to turn it into a brand that we can use to show off our magical part of the world.

“Art galleries can be expensive, pretentious places, and for the every-day person who enjoys art, that isn’t a world we inhabit. At Hope Cove Gallery we have something for everyone. Visitors want a momento to remind them of their holiday and that is what we have adapted in the current economic climate to provide.

“Art should be accessible to everyone so we have tried really hard to keep our prices down.”

Since the pandemic, Allie has seen the draw that Hope Cove has for holidaymakers unable to travel overseas and it has become a lively, welcoming place for families and people of all ages. Good food venues, beautiful beaches and some of the best views South Devon has to offer make this a much loved location. 

It has a little bit of everything and that is being captured in the artwork at Hope Cove Gallery.

Allie continued: “We want to be inclusive for everyone who comes through our doors, whether that’s someone coming off the beach with their pocket money, or someone who has spotted a stunning statement piece through our window, we can cater to everyone."

All of the artists on display in Hope Cove Gallery are from Devon and all but one or two are from right here in the South Hams. They have paintings, photographs, ceramics, textiles, glassware, woodwork and jewellery - including jewellery made from sea glass picked up right outside on the beach, woodturning pieces from a woodturner who lives in Hope Cove. You couldn’t get more local if you tried.
