A huge congratulations to the School House at Mothecombe, which was named in the Times’ 100 Best Places to Eat in the UK this month.

For those who have not yet been, The School House is the sister restaurant to the much loved Beach House at South Milton - expert purveyors of seafood and a particularly indulgent variety of salted caramel brownie.

Seafood and school dinners

The School House has continued the theme of individuality and quirky details that has become the proprietor’s trademark. For example, there is the blackboard menu of ‘school dinners’, which showcases a selection of predominantly sharing platters such as antipasti selections and ‘board bits’. For those with a more robust appetite however, they also do a mean steak frites, appropriately superb local seafood and a superb bacon sarnie.

In the prestigious Times listing, the restaurant was described by famed critic Giles Coren as serving "world class” food; a follow up from last summer when he went so far as to say it was a "brilliant seafood joint … the best in Devon, England and northern Europe”.

Spoiled for choice in the South Hams

Of course, across the South Hams we are blessed with many an award-winning and noteworthy restaurant, all doing justice to our wide variety of local produce from both land and sea. As such,

The School House is one of a number of locations in the South Hams to have received national praise this year alone.

This summer, The Winking Prawn garnered praise in The Telegraph’s best beach cafes and restaurants, saying the: “décor and casual atmosphere of this converted 1920s prefab beach hut (once the town’s tennis pavilion) seem funkily Antipodean”.

Devon Life’s Devon Restaurants with a View to Dine For feature also praised The Winking Prawn for its location by “the sparkling sea and a sandy beach, behind a rolling valley, lush and green,”.

In the same feature writers also celebrated the The Beach House at South Milton, describing it as a “great pit stop on a salty air walk, compare notes with fellow walkers about the food, the view and how many dolphins you’ve spotted.”

So with half term around the corner, it’s probably time to make dinner reservations!
