A spokesperson for Kingsbridge Coastguard Rescue Team said: "The Ordnance was located, and an area of the beach was cordoned off while photos of the device were sent to Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

"After inspecting the photos the EOD team made the decision to come and remove the device.

"After arriving on scene, EOD made the decision to perform a controlled detonation of the device. Our team worked with EOD to close the road, beach, and footpaths to secure a safe area for the detonation.

"Once detonated and ensuring everywhere was safe, we re opened the area. We want to thank the public for their patience in this incident.
