District councillor calls out "dismal collection service" and "flimsy excuses" after meeting

South Hams District Councillor John Birch has said that FCC Environment delivered a "dismal collection service" and "flimsy excuses" after a special meeting to discuss their conduct.

A special meeting called FCC Environment infront of the council to discuss the current performance issues with the waste collection contractor.

Cllr John Birch, (Lib Dem, Totnes) said that FCC Environment's "performance at the meeting equated to its dismal collection service. Flimsy excuses coupled with a complete failure to deliver answers to questions".

Cllr Birch continued: "I asked FCC if it accepted it had failed to comply with its contract obligations and how it intended to provide a proper service residents expect and deserve.

"It refused to answer the question or provide any solution to its problems. It merely stated it was in discussions with the council’s administration. In other words FCC admits it has failed to deliver and is unable to come up with any solution to the problem it has created.

"These were similar responses to the answers it gave to a meeting of the Council a year ago. All promises and no delivery equals widespread community dissatisfaction

"Enough is enough and it is time the council’s administration accepted FCC is incapable of providing a waste collection service residents expect and deserve.

"It is time to bring about a much needed change and improvement which from FCC’s performance at the Council meeting it is unable to bring about.

"It is time the Conservative administration at SHDC got to grips with this long running problem and let residents know its plans. Or is it going to continue to procrastinate?"
