Dog falls off cliff - Coastguard called to three incidents in 24 hours

Monty the Dog was rescued on Saturday, the last of three calls in 24-hours that Kingsbridge Coastguard Rescue Team were called to. 

For 24 hours over Friday and Saturday, 8 and 9 August, Kingsbridge Coastguard Rescue Team was called out to three separate incidents.

At around 2pm on Friday, they were called to a medical evacuation in Hope Cove. 

A spokesperson for Kingsbridge CRT said: "The first incident saw Kingsbridge CRT tasked alongside Bigbury Coastguard Rescue team, RNLI Lifeguards South Devon, Hope Cove Lifeboat, and Cornwall Air Ambulance to reports of an injured person in Hope Cove.

"Coastguard Rescue Officer’s (CRO) arrived on scene and assisted RNLI Lifeguards with casualty care. After some assistance the casualty was taken by a family members onto hospital for further checks and treatment. We wish the casualty a speedy recovery."

The next call was a medical incident at South Milton at around 8.30pm on Friday. 

The spokesperson said: "The second incident saw the team tasked once again by Falmouth Coastguard this time to assist South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust with a medical emergency. Thankfully paramedics were quickly on scene.

"We wish the casualty a speedy recovery. Thanks to the staff at the The Rock Box Devon for their help."

It was then Monty's turn to cause drama.

The crew were called to 'dog over cliff' at nearly 11am on Saturday.

The spokesperson said: "This morning Kingsbridge CRT were once again tasked alongside Bigbury CRT to reports of a dog over the cliff at Bolt Tail. Also responding were units from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service including Kingsbridge Fire. 

"Thankfully KB Fire Crew had been able to locate the dog - Monty - who had not fallen far, but due to the location required a technical rescue. With this specialist CRO’s trained in rope rescue set up a rope rescue system at the top of the cliff.

"One of Kingsbridge CRT’s cliff technicians was lowered to the Monty before he was then safely taken to the top of the cliff, where he could be reunited with his owner. 

"The owner did the right thing by not putting themself at risk by attempting to rescue Monty themselves, and called for help. A reminder to all to please keep dogs on leads near cliff edges. We ask that comments are respectful."
