A mother from Kingsbridge has said that her world stopped when she got a call that "every mum dreads".

Becky Hodder posted that as the weather gets nicer and the kids get closer to breaking up from school, "this will now always be a reminder from me to you to make sure you put a helmet on your child’s head".

Liam Dyas in hospital after the accident

She said: "One year ago my world stopped for a little while.

"I got the call every mum dreads - 'there’s been an accident, you have to get here now!'

"This was the result of a silly decision by Liam to jump on a friends bike without a helmet, he only rode down a hill, not even on it five minutes and went straight in to the railings.

"We didn’t know the full extent of his injuries until two days later - fractured skull, bleed on the brain and a fractured cheekbone. Not to mention the huge gash across his eyelid which left everything hanging out ????.

"ALL of which would have been avoided if he’d just put a helmet on!!

"They might moan and it may not be the coolest thing to have on but if it saves their life, it’s kind of worth the extra nagging.

"It literally knots my stomach every time I see a kid without one, especially riding the way they do!!

"If anyone does see my lot on a bike without a helmet, feel free to send them on home to me because I sure as hell don’t want to go through that again!"
