Devon County Show was back to full strength this year - always a great family day out
Devon County Show was back to its full strength this year, with brilliant attractions and the best of livestock that our county has to offer.
We attended the show on Friday and despite a couple of early showers, the weather was just as good as the events.
Starting off with seeing the Ridden Hunter classes, including some stunning sidesaddle on display, we then saw the Heavy Horses in Hand. A farmer’s most precious possession for hundreds of years, the heavy horse breeds were responsible for ploughing, driving, hauling, and all the jobs in between, before the introduction of the tractor.

In the Heavy Horses Mare class there was a near miss as one of the mares had a foal at foot and decided to take offence at either her foal or the person leading it and kicked out - we’re very pleased she missed! We caught it on video:
There was everything you would expect from a county show, as always, with the traditional skills of the shearers and farriers as the focus, alongside the livestock and heavy machinery.

The livestock was impressive as always, with hundreds of farms from across the county competing to produce the champion animals. You can see the Grand Parade of Livestock below:

Such a pretty sheep
We also checked out the trade stands, where you could get your hands on almost anything equestrian or agricultural that you wanted, as well as a lot of things not related to “country living” too - I ate way too much candy floss and coconut ice for a human - and all with friendly vendors and a relaxed and happy atmosphere.
Another highlight for me was the Jurassic Fibre Shetland Performance Display Team, who held three heats and a final of a Shetland Grand National, with drama, spills, loose horses and judges decisions left and right, as well as adorable Shetland ponies going hell for leather and leaning like motorbikes - check out one of the heats below.
Once again, the Devon County Show is a brilliant day out for the whole family, and well worth an early entry into next year’s diary. The full results of all the competitions can be found HERE.
Rupert very much enjoyed himself
