SHDC "welcomes review" of local government reorganisation

The Government has announced a review of the reorganisation plans that would see some areas of the South Hams absorbed into Plymouth City Council and others into Torbay.  

The decision would have seen four new councils created in Devon.

South Hams District Council’s Leader, Cllr Dan Thomas said: “I'm pleased that Government has listened. I wrote to Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) urging them to reconsider the decision and to arrange an urgent meeting with Devon’s political leaders to discuss the implications for our residents, businesses and communities.

“We recognise the Government’s plans to simplify local government and supports ambitions for devolution. However, the decision to expand the boundaries of Plymouth, Exeter and Torbay to form new unitaries, while placing the remainder of the county into a vast Devon Council, has caused deep disappointment and serious concern across our rural towns, villages and coastal communities.

“South Hams District Council believes there were stronger and more coherent alternatives available which were preferred by the majority of respondents to the consultations.

“This review offers an opportunity to make sure that any future changes are in the best interests of everyone in the South Hams and the rest of Devon.”

South Hams District Council says it will continue to work constructively with the Government, other Devon councils and local partners to ensure any future model strengthens services, supports growth and keeps communities at the centre of local decision-making.
