A free workshop for beginners to introduce the world of Djembe drumming is being offered for the promotion of "personal and social recovery and wellbeing".
Organised by James Carr and Paula Thomas as part of Devon Recovery Learning Community, the six week course aims to get students to become familiar with "basic techniques and concepts used in African drumming".
Held at Bridgetown Community Hall in Totnes every Tuesday between 3 January and 6 February, 3-5pm, students need no previous experience. You will be able to play some fundamental African rhythms with confidence in a safe and secure group setting. Drums are provided or you are welcome to bring your own.
There are a wide range of benefits associated with African drumming including:
● Promotion of personal and social well being.
● Promotion of relaxation and calm, lowering blood pressure and an enhanced sense of wellbeing.
● Aids the reduction of tension and stress by providing a focused form of relaxation much like meditation.
● Emotional release through non-verbal expression.
● Helps to control chronic pain by promoting the production of endorphins.
● Promotion of social wellbeing through the connection with the wider community.
Booking for this course will close on 31 December at 9am.
This is a course organised by A Recovery College provided by Devon Partnership NHS Trust to support mental health and wellbeing
Our students are people with experience of mental health difficulties, their family and friends, and the professionals who support them.
