Two local fire crews attends fire at a block of flats in Plymouth

Two local fire crews attended a fire in a block of flats in Plymouth. 

242 people were evacuated from the student accommodation building. 

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service evacuated control received a call to a fire in a block of flats on Alexandra Road in Plymouth on Wednesday.

Six fire engines from Ivybridge, Modbury, Bere Alston, Greenbank, Ashburton and Yelverton, an aerial ladder platform from Crownhill, an incident command unit from Honiton and five supporting officers. 

On arrival, crews confirmed fire in the kitchen of a ground floor flat involving a cooker. Evacuation was taking place and crews were getting ready to extinguish fire using breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and one safety jet.

The building was six floors and used as student accommodation. Students were allowed to return for their homes after around two hours. The kitchen involved was 10 percent damaged by fire and 60 percent damaged by smoke. 

This fire was deemed as accidental.
