Totnes Fringe Festival ticket sales almost double in landmark second year

Ticket sales for Totnes Fringe Festival almost doubled in its second year, rising from 2,011 in 2025 to nearly 4,000 in 2026. 

The festival recorded an estimated 4,350 audience attendances across four days in July, with more than 80 performances presented in 17 venues throughout the town - growing from 67 performances across 11 venues in 2025.

Alongside its ticketed programme of theatre, comedy, dance, spoken word and live performance, the festival offered free events in streets, cafés, shops, gardens and public spaces. Accessible ticket options included Pay Less and child prices, while 80 per cent of ticket income was returned to participating artists.

Supported by 109 volunteers and 4,000 printed programmes, the festival transformed churches, pubs, gardens, the Rotherfold, Leechwell Gardens and even Totnes’s iconic telephone box into performance spaces. Audiences encountered everything from roving poets and free family performances to lively public conversations and ambitious new theatre.

Festival Director Danielle McIlven said: “We’re incredibly proud of the quality and range of work brought to Totnes this year, but what makes the Festival truly special is seeing the whole town embrace it. For four days, artists, audiences, volunteers, businesses and venues became part of something much bigger than a programme of performances.

"People explored different corners of Totnes, discovered theatre in unexpected places, supported local businesses and shared experiences that could only have happened here.

“For me, the greatest success wasn’t measured in ticket sales. It was seeing so many people feeling that they had helped to create something that belonged to the whole town."

Local businesses played a significant role in making the Fringe Festival possible. They sponsored venues and performances, displayed posters, donated prizes, dressed shop windows to help turn the town orange and promoted the Festival to customers and visitors.

East Gate Bookshop sponsored the Festival’s Leechwell Gardens venue, which hosted a popular programme of free family performances throughout the weekend.

Nigel Jones, owner of East Gate Bookshop, said: “Totnes Fringe is exactly the kind of event that makes Totnes the fabulous town it is. Sponsoring Leechwell Gardens gave us the opportunity to support something joyful for the whole community and to play a part in making the festival happen. 

"An added bonus was welcoming new customers who hadn’t visited us before through our association with the Fringe. We’ll certainly be back.”

Post-festival feedback highlighted the welcoming atmosphere created for artists, volunteers and audiences. Artists praised Totnes Fringe Festival’s supportive team, engaged audiences and ambitious programme. Many reported full or near-full performances, while others said the festival had helped them develop new professional contacts, bookings and potential collaborations.

Volunteer feedback reflected a strong sense of pride in contributing to an event for Totnes. Volunteers particularly valued the friendships they formed, the collaborative atmosphere and the opportunity to support artists and audiences. Many have already expressed an interest in returning and becoming more involved in 2027.

Audience survey respondents repeatedly described Totnes Fringe as warm, friendly and welcoming. Comments included “such a lovely vibe”, “my favourite Fringe” and “a wonderful atmosphere”, while local residents asked: “Why didn’t we have this festival before?”

The festival’s volunteers received particular praise, with audiences commenting that the team in their distinctive orange T-shirts made them feel welcomed, cared for and supported from the moment they arrived.

Audiences also praised the quality and variety of the programme, describing it as an “excellent range of acts”, an “amazing variety” and “the best show in town”. For audiences living across South Devon, where access to dedicated theatre venues and touring work is limited, the festival created opportunities to experience ambitious live performance close to home.

Danielle McIlven added: “In a town without a dedicated theatre, Totnes Fringe has shown what can happen when artists, audiences, volunteers, businesses and venues come together with a shared belief that culture belongs here. Theatre wasn’t confined to one building. It spilled into streets, gardens, cafés, pubs and public spaces, creating experiences that people will remember long after the festival has finished.

“We want to build more than an annual event. We want Totnes Fringe to become a place where artists know they will be welcomed, where audiences can discover exceptional work and where ambitious, high-quality theatre can flourish outside our major cities,” she said.
