“As a one-man band, I can give my clients a truly personal and friendly service”, Simon explained. “I focus on private and residential projects, and as a small, local business, my prices reflect that.

“I can be at the end of the phone and you’re not going to be passed around to five different people, my clients contact me and I’m often able to arrange a visit within 24 hours. The big companies can have the big projects, I’m focussed on helping local people complete their projects as safely and efficiently as possible.”

Soakaway Testing - STG Engineering

Simon has more than 20 years of experience and has been growing his client base in the South Hams for the past five. Mainly through word-of-mouth, he relies on his excellent reputation and personal recommendations. With 16 five-star reviews on our website alone, he comes very highly recommended.

He has a great working relationship with a wide range of architects, planning consultants and local builders as well as civil and structural engineers.

Soil Core Logging - STG Engineering

Explaining his profession, Simon said: “In a nutshell, I investigate the ground; the underlying soil and rock. I identify what it is and how, when you build in or on it, it will behave differently. When you build, you take the natural ground and move it, load it, fill it; you’ve ultimately changed what’s there and the equilibrium it originally had.

"By investigating and analysing the ground with lots of testing (in-situ and laboratory), we can predict how it can or will move as a result whilst providing parameters and recommendations for foundations and retaining walls etc. Based on the ground type I can also determine the permeability; infiltration for surface water soakaways and percolation for foul water drainage fields and with new regulations around soakaways for surface water, for example, that’s where my work has an impact as well.

"By doing all this, it helps civil and structural engineers, architects and builders to know what the ground is allowing projects to progress and could help clients save costly unexpected fees’’.
