Kingsbridge Kingfishers Club Championships has been a success

The Kingsbridge Kingfishers Club Championships, sponsored by Fika Coffee House, has taken place over two weeks of fast, fun racing at Quayside Leisure Centre.

The annual event began this year with the 400 Freestyle, with Sam Stewart swimming the fastest time. However it was the second placed swimmer, Chloe Morris, who continued to make a name for herself in front of a home crowd.

Chloe’s start to her 2024/25 swimming season has seen her selected to race for Devon, and she has already qualified for the regional championships next summer. She hopes to go one step further and become only the seventh Kingfisher to qualify for nationals in 2025.

The Club Championships is a chance for the club’s newest swimmers to compete for the first time, alongside those who are more experienced. Many who have graduated out of local swim schools discovered the thrill of racing, with some becoming club champions in their first year at KKSC.

Out of the nine-year-olds, Emily Baxter was rarely beaten and became champion, while it was similar for Toby Morris in the boys’ category. Harry Freeborn won the 10-year-old boys title - becoming a club champion just like his father who swam for KKSC when the Quayside pool first opened in the late 1990s. 

Club Champions often need to be brave, swimming lots of new events to be able to win plenty of points. Lottie Taylor raced her first 400 Individual Medley and 800 Freestyle to help her retain her title in a very competitive 10 year old girls category.

There was a rare tie in the 14-year-old boys age group, with Danny Clack sharing victory with Oliver McKinlay. 

Also winning their age group trophies were Ivy Thomson, Will Robinson, Faye Morris, George Tucker, Louisa Wood, Lucas Quiggin, Chloe Morris, Cody Steer, Sophie White and Jack Sagar. 

The final events took place on Saturday, 23 November, with the dramatic Freestyle Skins taking centre stage. In front of a noisy crowd, five boys and five girls raced off in 50m freestyle races, with one swimmer being eliminated each time. The last swimmers standing were Chloe Morris and Ethan Clack, who each won prize money courtesy of sponsors GoB2B and Tucker Fencing.

Many thanks to all of the parents who supported their children throughout the event, as well as to those parents who stepped up to be volunteers in a number of different roles that helped such a large event run so smoothly.

Despite the club currently operating at full capacity, Kingfishers are on the lookout for more young sports people who think they have what it takes to be a fast swimmer. Space remains available for masters swimmers aged 18 or over, who train twice per week on Tuesdays and Fridays. 

Kingfishers’ next event is the Plymouth Christmas Splash, which acts as a qualifier to the Devon County Championships in January. 28 swimmers will be taking part.
