A pub in a glorious location on the South West Coast Path and with a focus on local and seasonal food is always worth a visit - and that’s why you should visit The Cricket Inn at Beesands.
Situated right on the Blue Flag awarded mile-long shingle beach, looking out to sea, The Cricket Inn has views to die for and if you’re really lucky, you’ll see the daily catch come straight up onto the beach and through the kitchen door.
Head Chef Jamie has a real passion for his food, and for his ingredients to be as sustainable as possible.
Charlotte Burdett, The Cricket Inn’s marketing manager, said: “The quality of the dishes he produces are just incredible. His creativity and style are exemplary and we’re always looking to improve our sustainability where we can.
“We ‘eat to the season’ as much as possible in the restaurant, and Jamie will look at a specific species of fish that is in season that month and build our specials around it, alongside seasonal produce.
“For example in May, he focussed on Skate Wing and wild garlic and produced some incredible dishes that brought Spring into the restaurant, for June we’re focusing on lobster which is hand-delivered to our door by Winkie, a Cricket Inn veteran and one of the last remaining born and bred Beesanders.”
All of the fish at The Cricket Inn is locally caught, with some of them being landed literally on the beach in front of the pub, including lobsters, scallops and crabs.
Charlotte added: “Using seasonal species is not only good for the planet and keeping our food miles down, but it also means we can keep our prices low, something we can pass onto the customer.”
The Cricket Inn has a strong base of year-on-year repeat customers, who keep coming back to be spoiled by the views, the food and the service.
They will also now be spoiled by their surroundings, with all the rooms being refurbished to the highest standard and some have had brand new en-suites installed. The refurbishment continues downstairs, with all the common rooms having a fresh look by the end of the summer.
“It’s a lovely balance of traditional and modern”, Charlotte explained, “All the rooms are state of the art and our thinking is modern, but our design gives a nod to the history of the building and all our locals have their own tables and know they’re being looked after as well as our visiting guests.”
Scott Heath, landlord: “We’ve had a busy few months refurbishing all of our guestrooms and relaunching both The Cricket website as well as the one for our sister pub The Church House Inn, Stokenham.
“After what has been an unprecedented couple of years, we’re thrilled to see our frequent customers heading back to visit us in beautiful Beesands, as well as new faces too. We’re always happy to see return guests and look forward to seeing many more over what is destined to be a very busy summer season!”
As well as the physical refurbishment, The Cricket Inn’s online presence has had a revamp too, with a new website being launched.
Not only does it show off what the pub can offer you, with video and virtual tours, but it also gives you the convenience of being able to book your stay or your meal online - what more could you ask for?
Oh, and your four-legged friend can come too, as dogs are made very welcome in the bar and in some of the restaurant too.
