What is Sheltered Housing?
Sheltered Housing is a type of accommodation for older people who are retired and are able to live independently but choose to live in a safe and secure environment with helpful staff who are on hand to support as and when required. We often refer to our Sheltered Housing apartments as Supported Housing, for this very reason, or Retirement Housing. Our sheltered houses are in convenient locations, often a converted home with a friendly manager and staff supporting 24/7/365, integrated alarm systems, communal areas for socialising and meals provided throughout the day.
What's included?
- Private rooms and bedsits in a converted house.
- Home Manager(s), responsible for looking after the buildings and making sure the residents feel safe and are well supported throughout the day.
- A community alarm system for safety and security of residents.
- Communal areas, such as a lounge, laundry room, guest flat and garden adaptations to make getting around easier and safer.
- Social activities among the residents, such as coffee mornings, film nights or a gardening club.
Who is entitled to Sheltered Housing?
Abbeyfield’s Sheltered Housing apartments are available to rent. Alternatively, there are funding options available subject to request that would need eligibility checks approved by a Local Authority or Housing Association.
The difference between sheltered housing and retirement housing
They are the same type of accommodation! There are some cases of sheltered housing being available to under 55’s but that’s the only difference. A sheltered housing scheme and retirement housing scheme are one in the same. All Abbeyfield’s housing options are only available to older adults over the age of 55 but the features of both are the same.
