Britannia @ The Beach Beesands - Home of fantastically fresh local seafood – affectionately known as ‘The Shack’ on Beesands Beach.

Home of fantastically fresh local seafood – affectionately known as ‘The Shack’. Here at The Shack we offer a combination of a traditional fishmonger, village stores and a unique rustic café.

Situated in the old fishing village of Beesands between Torcross and historic Hallsands with superb views across Start Bay.

Opening Times

We are open every day from 10am – 6pm and are taking evening bookings.

We always have lovely locally caught fish, to eat in at’ The Shack’ or to purchase from our fresh fish counter.

To be safe out of season, do call 01548 581 168 to enquire about our opening times or just send us a message.

About us

Britannia @ The Beach evolved from an idea by local fishing family Nick and Anita Hutchings, as a way of completing the cycle from catching seafood, to retailing it and now also offering it as part of a varied and exciting menu at the beach shack.

The family has owned the building for nearly 40 years, using it inconnection with their fishing business, firstly as the bait store and then from the mid ‘90’s as the operating centre for their business Britannia Shellfish Ltd. After 11 years this business had outgrown these premises and moved to a purpose built unit on the edge of the village. It is still run by the Hutchings’ family now.

With its’ historic fishing connections and rustic appeal ‘the shack’ has now evolved into a much loved local landmark, being directly on the shingle beach at Beesands, between Torcross and historic Hallsands with the National Trust coast path running right past the door, with the added bonus of Free Parking!!

We are members of Food And Drink Devon and Visit South Devon and are extremely proud to have been awarded a 5 star food hygiene rating by our local Environmental Health Office.

This family run business offers a warm welcome to all, including well-behaved dogs (we have a dog park outside the shack), and prides itself on offering quality, extreme freshness and value for money.

Menu

Our specials menu changes daily to include the freshest catches of the day, cooked simply with imagination to tickle your taste buds!

If you fancy sitting on the beach,  with your toes in the sea,  a seaside favourite – fish and chips is available all day to takeaway.

Fishmonger

Our fresh fish counter offers an ever changing selection of freshly caught local fish and shellfish much of it supplied by our own boats.

Line – caught bass, mackerel and pollack are in abundance during the summer months and if you time it right you might just see our boats landing the ‘fish special of the day’ on the beach directly in front of the shack. You can’t get much fresher than that!!

To find out what fish we have in today or to place an order for freshly cooked crab or lobster, give the crew a call on 01548 581168.

Village Stores

We stock everyday basic essentials such as freshly baked bread (delivered daily), dairy produce, general groceries and toiletries.

Freshly made sandwiches, (crab – our speciality!!), locally made pasties and scrummy cakes are all available to go or eat in.

And not forgetting the ice-creams – a full range of Walls ice cream is complemented by a scrumptious selection from local ice-cream makers Salcombe Dairy.

Lovely take-away of fresh picked crab on the shell! Add a pint of Otter Ale from the local pub and eat in the sunshine overlooking the beach. Heaven!

Simple yet utterly brilliant. We visited Britannia twice on our hols. Once to buy some fish to cook at home. They prepared it and wrapped it in foil to go straight in the oven, yummy! The second time we ate at the restaurant itself. It was very basic but the food was outstanding. The service quiet but attentive and a stunning view of the sea. Highly recommended
