Kingsbridge honours its community champions

Kingsbridge Town Council have awarded this years Community Champions, nominated by local people.

This year's Community Champions are Martin Longley, The Mahabarat Indian Restaurant, Peter Ralph and Laura Winser.

Presenting the awards was Mike Jennings' last act as Town Mayor, calling it a "glorious afternoon to celebrate the deeds and efforts of inspiring local people" and telling them "well done and thank you".

The reasons each person was nominated were varied:

Martin Longley is the driving force behind the weekly Bolberry Down Parkrun working with a group of volunteers and the National Trust to gain weekly access. Prior to this the nearest park runs were held in Paignton and Plymouth.

The Mahabarat Indian Restaurant were nominated following their kindness, humanity and generosity in spontaneously making food donations to people in need. A true team effort and deserving community champion.

Peter Ralph is the dictionary definition of community spirit. Peter, a former town councillor, walked a half marathon with fellow volunteer walkers to champion Cancer Research and raised considerable funds.

Laura Winser works tirelessly to introduce craft projects to people of all abilities from all walks of life. This has led to a not-for-profit social enterprise and permanent space at the Cookworthy Museum.

Mayor Mike Jennings will officially be handing over the Mayoral baton to Councillor Philip Cole this week.
