A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called just before 8.20am this morning to Woodland Road, Harbertonford. We sent one appliance, and they discovered an underground fire below a drain, believed to be electrical, associated with some roadworks taking place in the area.

"The road was initially closed but then partially re-opened with police controlling the traffic. The electricity was isolated by National Grid and the incident was left in their care.

"Wales and West Utilities were also in attendance due to the proximity of a gas main."
