Dartmouth students learn about apprenticeships from South Devon College

Dartmouth Academy has planned an "exciting week of activities" for students as the school celebrates this year’s National Apprenticeship Week.

This year’s National Apprenticeships Week is the 18th annual celebration of apprenticeships and skills and the contributions they make to businesses and communities. Apprenticeships and skills programmes are a key element of the government’s aim of boosting opportunities for young people.

Activities throughout the week included a visit from Georgina Cleasby, the Senior Coordinator for Schools Liaison and Transition at South Devon College. Her role focuses on school liaison and transitional support for young people and she came to give a presentation about apprenticeships to pupils in Years 10 and 11.

Some former Dartmouth pupils also came back to speak to current pupils about their experiences at sixth form.

Dartmouth Academy recognises the crucial role it has to play in preparing pupils for transitions for their next stage of education, training or employment. Careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) are an important and integral part of all pupils’ entitlement and learning at the academy to aid their personal development.

Through a planned careers education programme, they are committed to providing the appropriate activities and experiences to enable pupils to make well-informed decisions and successful transitions in life and work.

Nicola Perrott, Assistant Principal at Dartmouth Academy, said: “At Dartmouth Academy we are really keen to ensure that all our students are fully aware of the wide range of opportunities open to them when they move on from us. We want them to feel excited about their futures.

“National Apprenticeship Week is also an excellent way to highlight the positive contributions individuals make to local businesses and the wider economy, strengthening our links with our local community.”

Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West said: "At Education South West, we are proud to support Dartmouth Academy in building a culture of opportunity and ambition for all students. National Apprenticeship Week is a fantastic platform for inspiring young people and highlighting the vital role apprenticeships can play in shaping their futures and contributing to local communities.

"We remain committed to ensuring that every young person has the guidance, skills, and confidence to make successful transitions into their careers and beyond."

This year’s National Apprenticeship Week runs from Monday, 10 February, to Sunday, 16 February.
