Being trustworthy and dependable are the top priorities for Ben Seymour of Seymour Electrical, the Stokenham based business offering domestic and commercial electrical services from Kingsbridge to Salcombe, Dartmouth to Totnes. Here he tells us more about starting his business and why he and his family joined the South Hams community…

How did Seymour Electrical start?

I had worked as an electrician for a long time for other people, but when we had our first child I decided I wanted to work for myself because thought I could take greater control over my work/life balance and spend more time with my family. My daughter is 10 now, and I love the work that I do and how it allows me to enjoy time with my wife and kids as well.

What did you do before starting your own business?

I worked as an electrician for someone else for nine years. However, before that I worked for Tesco when I first left college, and I stayed on there to become a skilled baker. The hours were challenging, and when I split up with my partner at the time we sold the house and I put myself through night school so I could train as an electrician.

Have you always lived and worked in the South Hams?

No, we’re from the West Midlands, and were living in Solihill, but my Aunt lives in Dartmouth and I started bringing my family here for the regattas and summer holidays. We eventually decided we would move here while the kids were young because it’s such a wonderful place to bring up a family. We moved here in October 2019 and so far we’re loving it. We have four children and they are at Stokenham school, where they are really happy, and they love living by the sea.

What type of work do you do?

I mainly do domestic work; anything from changing a lightbulb to a rewiring a whole house, LED lighting and smart homes. However, I also do some commercial properties; they tend to be independent shops rather than big units.

Is there anything people don’t realise you can help with?

Burglar alarms! Although people don’t really have them around here as much, they are something I can fit, which is often useful for insurance purposes.

What are you looking forward to this year?

I am really just looking forward to establishing myself properly in the South Hams and building up a good reputation in a new area. We have had such a warm welcome from the local community, and we are loving being here. I just want to build a strong client base of people who know and trust that they can call me when they need me, for whatever they need, and I will turn up on time and do the best job possible.
