Hope Cove Lifeboat rescued twenty people in one day, with strong offshore winds.

The Hope Cove Lifeboat crew has warned of strong offshore winds, even when the onshore breeze is gentle, after they rescued twenty people on Sunday, 11 August.

People were being caught off-guard by the winds getting stronger away from the shore on Hope Cove, South Milton, Thurlestone, Bigbury, Bantham and Challaborough.

A spokesperson posted on social media: "It has been a lovely day...warm, sunny and with a gentle offshore breeze.

"But just a few meters off the beach that breeze builds. Today just a few meters off shore that gentle breeze became a force 6, gusting 7. That’s about 30mph. No matter how fit and strong you are you can’t fight a 30mph wind. It will push you out to sea.

"So please, before you launch any kind of vessel, particularly a paddleboard or a kayak, check the wind conditions. Look at which way the wind is blowing, and remember it will be stronger on the water than on land.

"Thankfully today we were able to get everyone back to shore safely. Tonight the crew have gone home for a well earned rest.

"Please help all of us to help you by checking the weather before you think about going to sea and please wear a life jacket, whatever your swimming ability."

If you find yourself in an emergency situation or spot someone else in trouble, you should call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.
