Salcombe RNLI attends four shouts in four days

Salcombe RNLI are called to a missing person, a stranded vessel, a capsized gig and a medical evacuation in the space of just four days.

On Wednesday, 8 June, Salcombe RNLI's all-weather lifeboat and the inshore lifeboat were called to join Prawle Point Coastguard Rescue Team and helicopter to help search for a girl who was reported to be caught in rip currents at Soar Mill Cove.

After an extensive search, all teams were stood down following reports that the casualty had made it back to shore.

On Friday, 10 June, at 10.25pm, the all weather lifeboat, Baltic Exchange III, was launched to reports of a 10m former fishing vessel aground with four people onboard, including two children, near Start Point.

When they arrived on scene, the casualty vessel was found not to be aground but suffering engine difficulties. With one lifeboat crew member aboard the vessel, it was taken under tow towards Dartmouth and handed on to the Dartmouth RNLI's inshore lifeboat for taking into harbour.

On Sunday, 12 June, a request from the Salcombe Harbour Master via the Coastguard was received to launch the inshore lifeboat Gladys Hilda Mustoe to a capsized gig in the entrance to Salcombe Harbour with seven people in the water. Private boats were quickly on the scene to help, and casualties were rescued without injury.

Shortly after the gig event in Salcombe Harbour, the Salcombe all-weather lifeboat launched to a request for a medical evacuation from a sailing vessel approximately twenty-three miles south-west of Plymouth. When they arrived on the scene, it was found there was one casualty requiring urgent medical attention.

Once the casualty had been transferred to the lifeboat, a swift transfer to Derriford Hospital was set up involving the support of the Plymouth inshore lifeboat.
