SHDC has said that the "unexpected appearance of a hole beneath the South Embankment was identified, surveyed, repaired and made safe within a fast turnaround".

A spokesperson for SHDC said: "When the disturbance in the paving on the Embankment was identified, immediate action was taken to secure the area with fencing. A further comprehensive survey was carried out which focussed on the identified hole and six other locations, using drop testing and camera inspections to fully assess the extent of any similar issues.

"The repair work was carried out successfully by Landmarc Environmental Engineering and involved filling the hole with concrete to ensure a quick and safe resolution.

"All fences will be removed, in advance of the Bank Holiday weekend and the Regatta celebrations."

Cllr John Birch, South Hams District Council’s Executive Member for Commercial Strategy, stated: “It’s very good news that the repairs have been quickly and efficiently completed with minimum disruption to our residents and visitors.

"We recognise the concerns raised by the timing of this incident, especially given the Regatta celebrations."

“In the autumn, once the busy summer period is over, we will plan what further investigations, if any, need to be carried out to ensure the long-term future and safety of Dartmouth’s Embankment.”
