James AA Gordon Property Maintenance and Landscaping are a Sponsor of southhams.com and are celebrating 10 successful years in business this year. With a glowing reputation for top quality service and prompt time keeping it’s easy to see why James’ family run company has gone from strength to strength. Here James explains what they do and how they do it...

Tell us about James AA Gordon

From a young age I’ve always enjoyed being outdoors in the fresh air and learning new skills so this line of work was a natural choice for me. I started back in 2011 on my own with a very small-scale business and have grown over the years. We have taken on some rather large projects over the years, but we do still enjoy the smaller tasks too. We have a large commercial client base throughout the South Hams and have completed the landscaping at Gara Rock Hotel in East Portlemouth and ventured into Cornwall to complete a large-scale turfing, grounds preparation and landscaping project at a holiday park. We have a great mixed range of clients, from local residents, second home owners, local businesses and local contractors and hold a good working relationship with them all.

What services do you offer?

We cover a wide range of services. We complete a lot of fencing and gate services from preparation, installation and repair. On top of this we also construct deckings, carports, log stores, pergolas and garden sheds. We have carried out cladding installations recently as this can really improve the look of any property.  We cover a very wide range of work and anything that we can’t undertake ourselves, we have a select group of subcontractors that we work closely with on a regular basis for that specialist service.

In 2019 we saw an opening in the market and started up Leaf It Out Waste Management, who are a fully licensed waste carrier, so if you are looking for a single item to be removed, a full property clearance or are looking for a commercial household bin for your property let, we are able to assist.

How big is your team?

Currently we have two full time members of staff and two part time members of staff as well as a selection of subcontractors who we can call on when needed. We invest in our staff, having trained one of our employees up from the age of 15, he completed his apprenticeship with us and now we’re pleased to say he’s managing some of our projects.

I love my job and working on site hands on. I don’t want to be stuck in an office managing a large company. I enjoy being on the tools, meeting people and seeing a job through from start to finish, we are a great team and work well together and all expect the highest level of service for our clients.

How do you compare with other property maintenance companies in the area?

We have a very personal approach to our work. James AA Gordon is a name you can trust. I’m proud of the great reputation we have in the area. A high proportion of our business comes from word of mouth because our clients appreciate the high-quality service, friendly approach and good work ethic that we offer. In my opinion that speaks for itself.
