The Church of St Thomas of Canterbury has stood in the village of Kingswear since about 1170 since the Norman Conquest. It stands in a slightly elevated position close to the railway station and the Dartmouth Lower Ferry and overlooks the River Dart.
The church is a grade II listed building that includes a tower dating back to 1173 and some of its features include the lid of the tomb of Brother Philip, who looked after the church in the 1200s and is a descendant of one of the soldiers who murdered Thomas Beckett, to whom the church is dedicated.
