Church of St Mary and St Gabriel

With its origins in the 13th century, our church has been at the centre of parish life for generations, providing a range of opportunities for worship, prayer and reflection, and remains a focal point in the 21st century.

The Grade I listed church is located on a steep bluff in the centre of the village at the end of a cobbled stone walk. 

A church was listed in the Domesday survey of 1086, and at that time there was a yew tree in the churchyard already thought to be several centuries old. Today that yew tree is between 1200 and 1400 years old, making it amongst the oldest trees in Britain.

Legend says that if you can walk around the tree backwards seven times without stumbling you will have a wish granted.

The oldest part of the present church is the13th-century Norman tower. The rest of the church was rebuilt in the 15th century after it fell into decay.
