River Erme
The Erme rises at 430 metres above sea level on the Stall Moor area of South Dartmoor on the Abbot’s Way and flows for 15 miles through or near Ivybridge, Ermington, Modbury, Holbeton and Kingston.
It reaches the sea at Mothecombe and Wonwell beaches in Bigbury Bay between the rivers Yealm and Avon. There are no ferries along the river’s length but it is possible to wade across the river between the slipways at Mothecombe and Wonwell for an hour either side of low tide.
The river lies within the South Devon AONB and, due to its diverse flora and fauna, is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The river is a popular haunt of wildlife enthusiasts and walkers although there is no circular route due to much of the adjacent land remaining in the ownership of private estates.
