History of Paignton in Brief ...
Paignton’s history stretches back to Saxon times, with the settlement recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086. For centuries, it remained a small fishing and farming community before the arrival of the railway in the 19th century transformed it into a popular seaside resort.
The railway arrived in 1859, opening Paignton to visitors from across the country and helping drive the development of hotels, promenades and seaside attractions. Paignton Pier followed in 1879 and remains one of the town’s best-known landmarks.
Paignton’s historic church and the remains of Paignton Bishop’s Palace reflect its long connection with the Bishops of Exeter, while the old village centre retains glimpses of the town’s earlier character.
It's a Fact !
Oldway Mansion, one of the largest and grandest Victorian buildings in the southwest, was constructed for Issac Merritt Singer, the founder of the Singer Sewing Machine Company.
Paignton Pier is 780 feet long! That is equivalent to 17 double-decker buses parked up end-to-end along the pier.
The Town has a historic tradition of baking massive “Paignton Puddings”. In 1859, a giant pudding was baked to celebrate the arrival of the railway which caused chaos when thousands of people showed up for a slice.
